Convicted Killer Charged with Assault in Prison

A man sentenced to decades in prison for the death of a Fairbury child has now been charged with a new crime: assault of a fellow inmate.
Jake J. Gonzalez, age 22, was convicted in Jefferson County District Court on October 25, 2021, of intentionally inflicting the injuries that lead to the death of a two-year-old child. He was sentenced to 70 to 80 years in the Nebraska Department of Corrections.
Gonzalez is charged with second degree assault, a class 2A felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
According to court documents, the incident that led to this most recent charge is alleged to have occurred a year ago, on August 4, 2023. However, he was not arraigned until July 17, 2024. No future court date is currently scheduled.
