County Celebrates A Job Well Done For Highway Department

Jefferson County Commissioners showed their appreciation to the county’s highway department on Tuesday, February 20, with both words and pizza, for their work both during and after the brutal series of snow storms that hit the area in January and let much of the county immobile.Road crews reportedly worked 16 hour days and longer, not just clearing roads but pulling stranded motorists out of snow drifts and responding to medical emergencies.The work was not just hard but dangerous, as evidenced when one Jefferson County worker was injured on the job. Commissioner Mark Schoenrock later told the Nebraska legislature that, by clearing the way for ambulances, the highway department saved at least one life during the crisis.“Now I’d like to give you an example of that with the terrible snowstorms that we had in January. We kept people in our county shop overnight, so they could go out and clear roads,” Schoenrock said at a hearing on Thursday, February 15. “We’re glad that we had them on duty that night, because they had to go out and clear the road for an ambulance to go out and get somebody in the middle of the night and probably saved that person’s life.” The work continued long after the storms were over, as significant damage was done to the roads. The job of making those roads passable again has been severely hampered by a shortage of rock and gravel.Commissioners also made it a point to thank local farmers who used their own equipment to help clear roads and pull stuck vehicles out of snow drifts.
