County Commissioner Meets with Senator Ricketts

Former Nebraska Governor and now U.S. Senator Pete Ricketts has been touring the state, holding a series of public briefings to discuss matters of federal government that are of concern to both him and Nebraska voters. Top among those concerns is spending.On Tuesday, September 3, Ricketts was at the 402 Sports Bar and Grill in Beatrice. Jefferson County Commissioner Mark Schoenrock was in attendance. Schoenrock told FJN, “his focus of the briefing, which I very much appreciated, was the overspending and the fiscal irresponsibility in Washington.”“In just the four years from 2019 to 2023, federal spending grew by 40 percent. Meanwhile, our population only grew 2.5 percent. Now revenues are not the problem. Revenue actually increased 28 percent during that period, but the reckless spending has given our nation a crippling national debt of 35 trillion,” Schoenrock said, reiterating some of Ricketts' talking points.Schoenrock compared how the federal government approaches to how a local government, such as Jefferson County, must do it, “And so we have a national debt problem, you know, and you can't keep spending more than what you take in, you know, I've told a number of people here in our county level, you know, we don't have a printing trust back there in the background to make up the difference. We actually have a balanced budget. Our revenues have to pay for our expenditures, and this has not been done in Washington.”
