County Officials To Change Email Domain

Most Jefferson County government officials currently use email addresses ending with .us, rather than with .gov, as many other government entities use. That will have to change, according to Brad Eisenhauer, Jefferson County IT (Information Technology), “The State of Nebraska is pushing on all the counties is to have a .gov domain name.”While the emails use a .us domain, the website for Jefferson County is https://jeffersoncounty.nebraska.gov/.Eisenhauer added, “So I think it’s inevitable. We’re going to need to do that.”The IT Department is working to make the transition as painless as possible, with a minimum of disruption in communication. Eisenhauer said, “Here’s the big drawback with it, everybody’s email address will change. So, we’ll keep the existing ones active, probably for at least two years. So, once we start with the new one, any email that you get to your old address will automatically forward to the new .gov.”Eisenhauer explained there are advantages to the change, “But in the end, we have a verified .gov. And we also have one domain name for all county offices, which makes things a lot easier as well.”It is not yet known when the change will go into effect or what the new emails will look like. Eisenhauer said the domain name will need to denote not just the county name but the state as well, “I think there’s 28 Jefferson counties in the U.S. So, they won’t let us use Jefferson County.”“So, we would probably have something like JeffersonCounty.NE.gov. It has to be approved by the .gov folks, the federal government, to use that.”
