COVID Public Emergency Officially Ends

The Federal COVID-19 Public Emergency officially expired on Thursday May 11, 2023, at midnight. That is according to the Nebraska Department of health and Human Services. As a result of the expiration, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will no longer receive data needed to publish the community transmission levels that have been used to determine source control guidelines for health care facilities. Jefferson Community Health and Life (JCH&L) used transmission levels to determine if masking was necessary.“DHHS will continue moving forward with providing Nebraskans with the best services possible and do our best to empower people to live their best lives,” said CEO Dannette R. Smith.JCH&L will continue to ask that visitors to JCH&L Gardenside long-term care refrain from visiting if they have symptoms of illness. In a press release, JCH&L noted, “We will continue to ask that clinic and hospital patients mask if they have certain symptoms such as coughs and sneezing. JCH&L Fairbury Clinic patients will still be treated in the negative pressure area if they have specific symptoms, in order to reduce the spread of illness.” JCH&L care facilities will identify local metrics that could reflect increasing community respiratory viral activity to determine when broader use of source control, such as masks, in the facility might be warranted. In the meantime, JCH&L is in the process of updating policies and procedures to comply with current CDC and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines.
