Darcy Brown Is July Veteran Of The Month

By Doug KapkeDarcy K. Brown was honored by Jefferson County Commissioners as July’s Veteran of the Month on Tuesday, July 2, 2024. In addition, she was presented with a patriotic wall hanging by Marley Rosener.Darcy (Turgeon) Brown was born in Denison, Iowa, in 1967. A few years later she and her family moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where she attended grade school. The family again moved to Carleton, Nebraska, when Brown was a freshman in high school. Her family purchased and ran a family café while living in Carleton. While in high school, Brown participated in track her junior and senior years and volley ball all four years.She was also the high school year book photographer. Brown joined the Army Reserves while still a senior in high school. Her unit was the 1012th General Supply Company in Fremont. She graduated from Bruning High School in 1985. Brown was supposed to leave from the Military Processing Center in Omaha on May 23, 1985, but the date was changed to August, 1985, in order to give her three months additional time to gain the weight necessary to meet the minimum military weight requirements at the time.Once Brown met the weight requirements she was sent to the U.S. Army Reception Station at Fort Dix, New Jersey. From there she was transferred and received 18 weeks of Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training. Basic Training was Fort McClellan, Alabama. She graduated October 23, 1985. Advanced Individual Training was at the Quartermaster School at Fort Lee, Virginia. She graduated December 18, 1985. She came home for Christmas and continued attending Army Reserve weekend meetings in Fremont. She moved to Hebron, Nebraska and had additional jobs in Fairbury, Nebraska. Her main job was at Walmart and the other job was at McDonalds, after working a short time at Caseys. While in the Fremont Army Reserve Unit, Brown attended summer camps in Minnesota and Kentucky.Brown eventually transferred to Troop B/4/ 302 Calvary Reserve Unit in Fairbury, Nebraska. Her Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) was 76P10, Material Control and Accounting Specialist. The unit did not have a slot for this MOS so duties were spent conducting office work. Specialist (E-4) Turgeon was released from active Army Reserve duty November 18, 1988. While serving her country she was a Rifle Marksman, a grenade expert and once had a Physical Training Score of 290 out of 300 points. While living in the Fairbury Community, Brown was a Fairbury Chamber of Commerce volunteer of the year once, is active in her church as a Daycare Provider for over 30 years, has participated in the Five Star Bible Camp for over 15 years and is a Hope Crisis Center Volunteer. Prior to Covid she sent 10 years teaching the Dave Ramsey Financial Course through her church. This course consists of nine each two hour sessions. Brown has taught approximately 50 people how to get out of debt and build financial wealth. She has worked at Walmart for 30 years and, for the last five years, has worked for the First National/Heartland Bank. In her spare time, Brown enjoys deer hunting, photography, quilting and spending time with family members and friends. She currently lives in Fairbury with her husband, Doug, of 32 years.
