Do You Know My Name?

By Gordon Hopkins So, I was yelling at one of my cats this morning (“Leave those dang books alone!!”) and I had a strange realization.My cats don't know my name.Obviously, my cats know who I am. I'm the guy who feeds them and scratches them and yells at them when they pull books off the bookshelves. But they don't actually know my name.They know their own names. When I call Harper, he comes (especially when its time to eat). When I yell at Archie to stop puling books off the shelf, he looks at me with quiet disdain and then goes back to dropping paperbacks onto the floor.They also know each others' names. When I call Groucho, he ignores me but Archie and Groucho look at him to see if he reacts. They know I'm calling him and not them.But they have no idea what my name is or if I even have a name. I live alone with three cats and no people (which is how I prefer it), so they hear no one calling out to me, using my name.I'm not really sure how I feel about this. In the grand scheme of things, it isn't terribly important, whether or not my cats know my name. Still, it feels a bit weird talking to someone that doesn't know my name. Of course, the fact that I am having conversations with cats instead of people is probably a bigger concern.
