Dorothy Helene (Watson) Gaither

Dorothy Helene (Watson) Gaither, 90, died May 24, 2022, at Wilmington, N.C.Born June 3, 1931, at Lincoln, Nebraska, to Frank Hewitt and Frances Katherine (Schemel) Watson. Raised in Fairbury, NE, and was a 1949 graduate of Fairbury High School where she was involved in various music groups, including chorus, the triple trio and district music contests; glee club; the student newspaper; and in class play productions, including a lead role in her senior year.Dorothy attended Doane College at Crete, NE, where she was a member of the Doane Singers and Phi Sigma Tau sorority. After a year at Doane, she transferred to the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. She was affiliated with Delta Gamma sorority, earned an education degree, and after graduation taught for the Denver Public Schools for a short time before becoming an airline attendant in the mid-1950s.On Dec. 20, 1958, she married Joseph Milton Gaither at Mobile, AL. They made their home in Wilmington, NC, and divorced in 1972. Dorothy continued her teaching career in Wilmington and retired in 1989. After retiring, she held a real estate license for a brief time.Dorothy read on a broad range of subjects and topics, and particularly enjoyed her New Yorker magazine subscription. She also enjoyed membership in a Wilmington-area garden club.She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Richard Watson and Peter Edwin Watson; her ex-husband; aunts and uncles. She is survived by sister-in-law Nikki Watson Easley, Lincoln, NE, and four second cousins. She was interred next to brother Richard at Fairview Cemetery, Lincoln, NE.
