Dress Code Policy Passed At FPS

By Gordon HopkinsThe Fairbury Public School Board voted unanimously to approve changes to the school’s dress code at a meeting the evening of Monday, September 13.FPS High School Principal Sean Molloy recommended some amendments to the code. Molloy said at the meeting, “Dress code, I mean, it’s something that’s really hard to kind of anticipate what to expect until you’re there in the building every day.”Molloy explained to the board one of his reasons for the proposed changes, “I think, historically, in my opinion, dress codes just very unfairly singled out females.”Among the changes Molloy recommended were removing language that forbid short-shorts,” He said, “I would feel more comfortable with removing short-shorts out there entirely, as well as the bare midriff, belly button style shirts, because styles have changed so much. And that is what a lot of girls wear.”Molloy also recommended removing the prohibition against “jeans with tears that expose flesh.”Molloy said if that rule was enforced, “I mean, I’m sorry but, that would be half of our student population.”Molloy said changing styles was not the only reason he was uncomfortable with some of the requirements in the dress code, “You know, it’s unfortunate but at times, they’ll say ‘Well, you know, this is what I have to wear.’ Families can’t easily afford to go out and purchase new clothes and it just puts everyone in a really uncomfortable position.”Molloy also noted, “The month that we’ve been in school, there have been two dress code violations, really only two instances that I felt that it was very inappropriate.”Molloy said, “So what I’m really trying to do is find a balance of what’s appropriate for school, but also honoring individuality and not, maybe, not picking the battles with students based off of what is currently in style and what they have.”
