Driver Does Not Believe Government Can Make Him Carry A License – Judge Disagrees

A Fairbury man that disputed the government's right to require him to carry a license while driving a vehicle took his case to court and lost.Cameron D. May, age 54, appeared for a bench trial in Jefferson County Court Wednesday afternoon, August 6, 2025. Linda Bauer was the presiding judge.May was charged with driving without a license on his person and improper display of the number of plates. Each charge is a class 3 misdemeanor that carries a $25 fine.May was stopped and cited by deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office on June 6, 2025. May does have a valid license. He just did not have it on his person. In addition, May did not have a license plate affixed to the front of his vehicle. In Nebraska, most vehicles are required to display two license plates, with some exceptions. Beginning 2029, the state will only require one license plate but, until then, the two-license plate rule still applies.After testimony from a single witness, the deputy that initiated the traffic stop, May was found guilty and fined the waiver schedule of $25 for each count.The next day, May was in Jefferson County District Court, in front of Judge David J.A. Bargen.May was charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, a class 1D felony punishable by three to 50 years in prison. Nebraska law prohibits an individual with a felony conviction from possessing a firearm. Per Nebraska Revised Statute 28-1206, “The felony conviction may have been had in any court in the United States, the several states, territories, or possessions, or the District of Columbia.”May has felony convictions in California for grand theft in 1992 and corporal injury to a spouse in 1994.As in the county court case, May has disputed the government's authority to prevent him from possessing any weapons. However, he recently accepted plea deal and pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of possession of a knife, a class 3 felony punishable by up to four years in prison, two years of post-release supervision and a $25,000 fine.Judge Bargen ordered a PSI (Post-Sentencing Investigation. Sentencing is scheduled for November 6, 2025.
