Fairbury Issues Water Conservation Notice

Due to the lack of precipitation, Fairbury Mayor Kelly Davis is requesting residents conserve water usage. Residential water usage will be regulated with: Addresses ending in even numbers are to limit outdoor water usage, including watering lawns, washing vehicles, etc. to even calendar days. Usage will be restricted to before 10:00 a.m. and after 9:00 p.m. Addresses ending in odd numbers are to limit their outdoor water usage, including watering lawns, washing vehicles, etc. to odd calendar days. Usage will be restricted to before 10:00 a.m. and after 9:00 p.m.This announcement came Thursday, June 19, as the National Weather Service was warning the public of dangerous heat throughout the weekend.Kelly Davis said, “We put into effect phase 1 of the water restriction order per state statute 51.48 (C) (3) on Friday afternoon at the recommendation of Water Superintendent Gregg DeFrain. Because of the lack of precipitation and the predicted high temperatures, we did this as a preventive measure, so we don’t have a problem with the water tower getting so low that the alarms are activated, like has happened in the past. We wanted to be proactive rather than reactive. We are pumping 1.3 to 1.4 million gallons of water a day, and with Crystal Springs not online yet and the east wells struggling to keep up, we decided to try to get the citizens to comply with the request to go into water conservation mode. We are hoping we get some rain so people will not have to water so much and we can lift the restriction. Until then, the request will remain in effect.”The situation will be reviewed by city staff on a regular basis and the request will remain in effect until further notice.According to the annual Nebraska Statewide Groundwater-Level Report from the Conservation and Survey Division in the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s School of Natural Resources, the past several years of drought conditions in Nebraska have resulted in a decline in groundwater levels in the eastern half of the state.
