Fairbury Man Accused of Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Gets Prison Time

A Fairbury man was sentenced to three years in prison for child abuse and sexual assault.Brandon L. Myers, age 41, appeared in Jefferson County District Court on Thursday, September 4, 2025. David J.A. Bargen was the presiding judge. Myers, a former employee of Jefferson County, was originally charged with child abuse and third-degree sexual assault of a child, both class 3A felonies, punishable by up to three years in prison, 12 to 18 months of post-release supervision and a $10,000 fine, as well as third degree assault, a class 1 misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.The defendant's wife, Bobbi J. Meyers, age 45, was charged with child abuse, a class 4A felony punishable by two years in prison, nine to 12 months of post-release supervision and a $10,000. She was also charged with failure to report child abuse, a class 3 misdemeanor, which carries a penalty of three months in jail and a $500 fine. The InvestigationAn investigation into the couple began in April of 2024, when the Nebraska State Patrol received a report of the alleged sexual assault. On Thursday, May 2, 2024, investigators arrested Brandon Myers. As Myers was an employee at the Jefferson County Jail at the time of his arrest, he was lodged in the Thayer County Jail.After further investigation, Brandon Myers’ spouse, Bobbi Myers, was arrested on Monday, May 7, 2024. Plea DealsIn accordance with the plea agreement, Brandon Myers pleaded no contest to child abuse and a reduced charge of third-degree sexual assault, a class 1 misdemeanor. The third-degree assault charge was dismissed. The agreement also included a recommendation of concurrent sentences.Bobbi Myers accepted a plea deal. Myers pleaded no contest to failing to report child abuse and a reduced charge of negligent child abuse, a class 1 misdemeanor. On January 2, 2025, she was sentenced to 180 days in jail. It was revealed in court that she would likely serve as a witness against her husband if his case went to trial. SentencingThe defendant was represented by attorney Benjamin Murray, who asked for probation for his client. He said, “It was a series of bad decisions.”A PSI (Pre-Sentencing Investigation) was completed by the Probation Department prior to the sentencing date and available for review by the court. Special Prosecutor Gail Ann VerMaas said the PSI showed the defendant did not take accountability for his actions. “He does have responsibility issues,” said VerMaas. “He minimized throughout the interview.”VerMaas said the state opposed probation and asked for a prison sentence, “We do believe this is a very serious case and there was a possibility of escalation.”The defendant spoke briefly to the court. He said, “I understand the whole ordeal has been traumatic for everyone involved.” Judge Bargen said, “I find the defendant is not a fit candidate for probation.”“The court takes a very dim view of cases like this,” said the judge, noting that the victim was a child. “Today is the day of accountability.” Myers was sentenced to three years of incarceration for the count of child abuse, with credit for 112 days time served. He was also given one year of incarceration for the assault. As per the plea agreement, those sentences will run consecutively, meaning at the same time.The defendant is also required to register as a sex offender for 15 years.The defendant was then remanded to the custody of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office to carry out the sentence.
