Fairbury Man Charged With Assault, Strangulation

John W. Goosman, 60, of Fairbury, appeared in Jefferson County Court on Wednesday, December 15. Linda Bauer was the presiding judge.Goosman is charged with assault by strangulation, a class 3A felony punishable by three years in prison, nine to 18 months of post-release supervision and a $10,000 fine. He is also charged with third degree domestic assault, a class 1 misdemeanor that carries one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.Goosman was arrested on November 24 of this year after Jefferson County Deputies responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence in Fairbury.Goosman requested court-appointed counsel and attorney Matthew Kosmicki was assigned to the case. Another hearing is scheduled for January 5, 2022.Kosmicki has represented the defendant in court previously. Earlier this year, Goosman was charged with third degree domestic assault and possession of methamphetamine, a class 4 felony punishable by two years in prison, 12 months of post-release supervision and a $10,000 fine.In accordance with a plea agreement, Goosman pleaded No Contest to a reduced charge of attempted possession, which is a class 1 misdemeanor. The assault charge was dismissed.On April 10th of this year, at approximately 3:38 p.m., Jefferson County Deputies met with an acquaintance of the alleged victim in this case, who show Deputies a text he received which said, in part, “I need your help, John (Goosman) is abusive, and I want you to bring the cops with you.”The text also indicated Goosman has, “a jigsaw of meth.”Deputies arrived at a residence in the 900 block of Maple Street in Fairbury. According to the Arrest Affidavit, the victim alleged Goosman had “punched her in the chest several times.”Goosman denied the allegation. Deputies then placed Goosman under arrest. He was searched and Deputies located “a clear plastic straw that was approximately five inches long,” in Goosman's pants pocket. Goosman indicated he had found the straw on the floor.The Deputy who filled affidavit wrote, “I assumed it (the straw) contained methamphetamine residue in it.”The straw field tested positive for methamphetamine.Felonies are transferred to District Court. By pleading to a reduced misdemeanor charge, the case was sentenced in County Court. The Judge sentenced Goosman to 18 months of probation and to attend a batterers intervention program.
