Fairbury Man Charged with Domestic Assault

Justin B. Cribbs, 43, of Fairbury, appeared in Jefferson County Court via webcam from the Jefferson County Jail. Linda Bauer was the presiding judge.Cribbs was arraigned on two counts: third degree assault, a class 1 misdemeanor, punishable by one year in jail and a $1,000 fine, and criminal mischief, a class 3 misdemeanor, punishable by three months in jail and a $500 fine. If found guilty, the defendant may also be responsible for restitution.Jefferson County deputies were dispatched to a residence in Fairbury on April 28 of this year at approximately 7:47 p.m, responding to a call. According to the Warrantless Arrest Affidavit, it was the caller, “who reported that a white male who lived in the adjacent property to the south, in a trailer had walked over to his dad(‘)s shop and used a white pipe to break out his passenger side taillight on his white ford pickup.”The affidavit noted that another individual, “also reported that just prior to the incident with the pickup, the same male had chased her and her sister who were in a blue chevy trailblazer with the same white pipe screaming at them.”The deputy wrote, “They reported the male as a white male with no shirt on, wearing gym shorts. They also reported that he had started coming at their vehicle form the adjacent property with the trailer house on it to the south of the shop. I made contact with Cribbs at the trailer on the adjacent property to the south. Justin stated that he had an issue with the kids coming and going from the property, but stated that the events that he was accused of never took place. It should be noted that Cribbs was wearing gym shorts and no shirt when he was contacted. The victims and three other individuals that were on scene identified Cribbs as the suspect and volunteered to fill out sworn statements in regards to the two charges.”In court, the defendant pleaded Not Guilty.Cribbs is represented by Public Defender Scott Gropp, who requested a bond review. The bond was previously set at $5,000 (10 percent). Gropp indicated his client was unable to pay that and requested a $1,000 bond.“I’m willing to reduce it some,” said Judge Bauer. “But I think $1,000 is low, considering the nature and circumstances of the offense.”The judge reduced the bond to $2,500 (10 percent). Cribbs said he would be unable to pay that. The bond also has a no contact provision with the alleged victims.A pretrial hearing is scheduled for June 1, 2022.This is not Cribbs’ first run in with the law. In 2020, he was sentenced to 180 days in jail by Jefferson County District Court judge Vicky Johnson. Cribbs was originally charged with possession of a controlled substance, a class 4 felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, an infraction. In accordance with a plea agreement, Cribbs pleaded No Contest to a reduced charge of attempt of a class 4 felony, which is a class 1 misdemeanor.
