Fairbury Man Gets Prison Time for Missing Court

A Fairbury man was sentenced to two years in prison for failing to appear for court.A warrant was issued for John Seefus, age 51, after he failed to appear for Jefferson County District Court as scheduled on Thursday. March 2, 2023. David Bargen was the presiding judge.Seefus was one of five suspects arrested in a drug bust in Fairbury on December 16, 2022. At approximately 7:45 p.m., deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office conducted a Narcotics Search Warrant on a residence at the 1000 block of B Street in Fairbury. Upon entry, five adults and two minor children were located on the premises. According to the Sheriff's Office, multiple controlled substances and related items were found in the residence, including: methamphetamine, marijuana, THC wax, and “numerous paraphernalia items.”Seefus was arrested and charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, a class 4 felony punishable by up to two years in prison and one year of post-release supervision.An additional charge of failure to appear for court was added, also a class 4 felony. In accordance with a plea agreement, Seefus pleaded No Contest to failure to appear and the remaining charges were dismissed.Sentencing was set for Thursday, September 7, 2023.The defendant's attorney, Matthew K. Kosmicki, requested time served for his client. He said, “Substance abuse has been an issue for him.”He also noted his client had limited financial means and said, “He tells me he did not mean to miss court.”Judge Bargen said, “The defendant has not led a law-abiding life.”Seefus was given two years in the Nebraska Department of Corrections, with credit for 82 days time served. He was then remanded to the custody of the Jefferson County Sheriff's office to carry out the sentence.
