Fairbury Remains Without a City Administrator

By Gordon HopkinsThe City of Fairbury remains without a city administrator seven months after the last person to hold the position was let go. The problem is not unique to Fairbury. The entire nation is facing a workforce shortage in virtually every industry. A great many employers have been forced to increase wages to attract workers and Fairbury Mayor Spencer Brown acknowledged the city will have to do the same, saying, “We have removed the salary guidelines from our listings. We understand that we will need to pay more to get the person we need. We have expanded our advertising as well.”The previous administrator, Jacob Matthews, was terminated after just 57 days on the job. The announcement came Friday, September 9, 2022, from Mayor Brown, who provided no additional details at the time. The following Monday, Mayor Brown issued a statement, “Upon review and careful consideration, I found the city needed a change in the day-to-day leadership role to execute the tremendous amount of improvements the city is currently undertaking at a rapid pace. The position of a city administrator is very dynamic and requires detailed engagement across all departments to be successful. Current city staff is dedicated to keeping things moving in the right direction until a suitable candidate is found.”The mayor said, “We have had some applicants, but none have met the standards we are looking for.”Mayor Brown also noted their was considerable competition. He estimated seven communities are currently looking for administrators.
