Fairbury Swimmers Have Excellent Run At State Swim, Dive Competition

The swim and dive season wrapped up this last weekend for BNFF at the state swimming and diving meet, Feb. 23-Feb. 25.The BNFF girls finished in 19th place out of 33 swim and dive team from all over Nebraska. Head coach Dina Scheele was able to speak on the team’s performance saying, “We are very proud of how the swimmers swam at state. We saw many personal best times. A great way to end the season. All the hard work through the season had paid off. We told them to come ready to do your best, but most of all enjoy the moment. This state team had a lot of fun together. That is what it is all about.”From the 11 was the duo of juniors Lily Davis and Ava Snyder competing at diving as diving coach Marian Wallen was able to speak on their performance saying, “This is Lily’s third year qualifying for state and she had her goal of making both cuts today. She completed her first five dives very well, but fell short of the first cut. She has been working on some more difficult dives to help her improve her score. I know Lily will return to state next year and will focus on making the cut for her senior year.”Davis finished 25th.The girls 200 medley relay team of sophomore Jaedyn Baxa, sophomore Addisyn Baxa, senior Mikya Lierman and junior Elise Vancleave, was seeded 26th going into the state meet. They finished with a time 2:02.28, which was not their best time, they placed 25th.Girls 200 free relay team of Lierman, Elise Van Cleave, Jaedyn Baxa and Avery Baumann was seeded 19th going into the state meet. They swam a time of 1:43.17 in the prelims on Friday good enough for 13th place, which qualified them to swim in the consolation race on Saturday.On the Saturday finals, the relay team swam a time of 1:43.48, which placed them in 12th place.The goal for this relay was not only to drop time, but to try to break the school record time of 1:42.84. They came from .33 seconds from breaking the school record which was a goal the girls had hoped to achieved.Girls 400 free relay team of Baumann, Van Cleave, Tabitha Crawford and Baxa, swam a time of 3:51.86, which was almost four seconds faster than their best time achieved just two weeks before. However, the relay was disqualified from a false start and was unable to place.“Even though it was disappointment this happen at state, I want the girls know how proud I am on how they swam,” Scheele said.All four swimmers, swam a personal best times. Swimming in individual events was Fairbury senior Mikya Lierman in the 50 freestyle, swimming a time of :25.94.Mikya had placed 28th. FHS sophomore Avery Baumann also competed in the 50 freestyle. Going into the state meet, Baumann was seeded 25th. In Friday prelims, Baumann swam a time of :25.17, good enough for 14th place and a chance to swim in the finals on Saturday. In the finals, Baumann swam a time of :25.18, placing her 14th. Baumann also competed in the 100 freestyle. Going into the state meet, Baumann was seeded 22nd. At Friday prelims, Baumann swam a time of :54.71, which was an all-time best time, and good enough for 16th place and a chance to swim in the finals on Saturday.In the finals, Baumann swam a time of :55.47, keeping her at 16th place.
