Fairbury, Thayer Central, Tri County, Meridian and W-C All Send Competitors To Omaha

Six Fairbury Jeff wrestlers punched their ticket to Omaha for state wrestling February 17-19. Hayden Bear at 106-pounds, Conner Gerths 138-pounds, Riley Arner 160-pounds, Noah Hyson 220-pounds, Makena Schramm 185-pounds and Kazz Hyson in the 285-pound division.The Jeffs finished seventh out of 16 as a team.Each Jeff put on a stellar effort as they had earned their way to state, but among the competitors Conner Gerths had an underdog story from this weekend with a memorable climb coming in as a number 11 seed beating the six seed, three seed, and two seed to qualify for State.Gerths (24-28) faced Anthony Wood of St. Paul (32-18) and won 5-3 before pinning Kanyon Talton (34-7) of Norfolk Catholic in 5:32 to reach the finals, dropping to Wyatt Olberding of Falls City.Bear started off losing to Derrick Ruzicka of St. Paul but would battle back to be in the fourth place match, dropping again to Ruzicka. Bear quickly pinned Jasmine Guerrero of Logan View in :35 before defeating Asher Koehnen to reach the third place match.Arner dropped to Bryce Sutton of Central City before coming back to defeat Ryder Anderson of St. Paul. Arner then pinned Adrian Hernandez of Sutton in 2:55. Arner then faced Lucas Anderson of Conestoga and won in 4:09 before pinning Tavis Uhing of Oakland-Craig by pinfall in 4:48.Noah Hyson dropped his first round match, but then would face Mike Rhodes of Wilber-Clatonia and won in 3:30 before picking up a medical forfeit over Rylie Thomsen of St. Paul. Ethan Buchli of Milford faced Hyson in the third place finals and took the fall in 4:46.Kazz Hyson started the tournament by pinning Keith Kvasnick of W-C in 1:22 before dropping to Quade Peterson of St. Paul. In the third place side of the bracket, Hyson defeated JT Brands of Oakland-Craig 6-2 before pinning Kale Nordmeyer of Malcolm in 3:33 to get to state.
