Fairbury Woman Accused of Stealing from Cars Sent to Jail

A woman accused of multiple thefts from vehicles in Fairbury was sentenced to jail.Ramona Ruth Jones, age 56, of Fairbury, appeared in Jefferson County District Court on Thursday, July 11, 2024. Favid J.A. Bargen was the presiding judge. Jones was originally charged with theft of property with a value of greater that $5,000, a class 2A felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. On Friday, June 30, at 9:30 a.m., the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were notified of a subject that had been seen getting into vehicles near the downtown square near the courthouse in Fairbury. Numerous items were found missing from different vehicles during the initial investigation. After locating surveillance footage in the area, the deputies were able to identify the suspect on the video from previous contacts. Numerous deputies conducted a search of the area and were able to locate the female at 11:37 a.m. near the intersection of 10th and E Streets in Fairbury. According to the Warrantless Arrest Affidavit, “After placing Ramona into custody several items were located on her person including cash, checks made out to 3rd Street Auto, several registrations to vehicles, multiple bank and debit cards that did not belong to Ramona, as well as insurance cards to multiple vehicles.” Jones was taken into custody and booked into the Jefferson County Jail.The defendant was represented by attorney Dillon J. O'Doherty, who requested probation for his client. O'Doherty indicated his client had one year sober and was staying at a sober living home.Jones told the court, “It's not in my character, the way I behaved that day.”“I'm not going to give you probation,” Judge Bargen told the defendant. “I can't ignore the criminal history as well.” Bargen pointed out that the defendant had been on probation four times previously.The judge sentenced Jones to 180 days in jail, with credit for 92 days time served. Jones was remanded to the custody of the Jefferson County Sheriff's office to carry out the sentence.
