Fairbury Woman Charged After Alleged Stabbing

Shanon Branson, age 47, of Fairbury, appeared in Jefferson County Court on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, via webcam from the Jefferson County Jail. Linda Bauer was the presiding judge.Branson was arraigned on charges of second degree assault, a class 2A felony a class 2 felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison, and use of a deadly weapon (a knife) to commit a felony, a class 2 felony punishable by up to 50 years in prison.According to the deputy that filled out the arrest affidavit, on November 7, 2023, at approximately 5:12 p.m., “Jefferson County dispatch called and advised me that the reporting party saw Jody Duke stabbed in the chest on 11/06/23 and again on 11/07/23.”Duke was located at the intersection of 10th and G Streets. An ambulance was called and he was checked out for injuries but not transported to the hospital.Deputies then arrived at Branson's residence. According to the affidavit, she told deputies, “He went after me and I stabbed him.”Branson was arrested at approximately 6:32 p.m.Duke and Branson had previously been in a relationship, as indicated in prior court cases.The defendant is also facing an assault charge from an earlier incident. Both she and Kodi L. Surrell, age 42, of Fairbury, were arraigned in Jefferson County Court on Wednesday, September 27, 2023. Each defendant is charged with assault by mutual consent, a class 2 misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.Both defendants reported living at the same residence.Public Defender Scott Gropp was appointed to represent Branson in the earlier matter but Gropp has represented Duke in previous cases and could not represent Branson on the new case due to the potential conflict of interest.Gropp was allowed to withdraw from the case and Judge Bauer assigned attorney Dillon O'Doherty to represent Branson on both cases.Bond was originally set at $100,000 (10 percent). County Attorney Joseph Casson objected to a PR (Personal Recognizance) bond but did not object to a bond reduction, “There could be some reduction but I don't think it will make much difference.”Judge Bauer lowered the bond to $75,000 (10 percent).
