Fairbury Woman Gets 180 Days for Failing to Report Child Sex Abuse

A Fairbury woman accused of child abuse accepted a plea deal from the court and was sentenced to 180 days in jail. It was revealed in court that she will likely serve as a witness against her husband if his case goes to trial. Her husband is also her co-defendant and has been charged with sexual assault of a child.Bobbi J. Meyers, age 44, appeared in Jefferson County District Court on Thursday, January 2, 2025. She was originally charged with child abuse, a class 4A felony punishable by two years in prison, nine to 12 months of post-release supervision and a $10,000. She was also charged with failure to report child abuse, a class 3 misdemeanor, which carries a penalty of three months in jail and a $500 fine.In accordance with the plea agreement, Myers pleaded no contest to failing to report child abuse and a reduced charge of negligent child abuse, a class 1 misdemeanor punishable by one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. The defendant's husband is Brandon L. Myers, age 40. He was a former employee of Jefferson County. He is charged with child abuse and third degree sexual assault of a child, both class 3A felonies, punishable by up to three years in prison, 12 to 18 months of post-release supervision and a $10,000 fine. He is also charged with third degree assault, a class 1 misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. He is represented by attorney Benjamin Murray. An investigation into the couple began in April of 2024, when the Nebraska State Patrol received a report of the alleged sexual assault. On Thursday, May 2, 2024, investigators arrested Brandon Myers. As Myers was an employee of the Jefferson County Jail at the time of his arrest, he was lodged in the Thayer County Jail. After further investigation, Brandon Myers’ spouse, Bobbi Myers, was arrested on Monday, May 7, 2024.At sentencing, Special Deputy County Attorney Gail VerMaas said to the court, “She has a bit of a blind spot when it comes to her husband.” “The victim did tell her mom at least twice,” said VerMaas about the allegations of failing to report the abuse. “She did not believe the abuse was happening if she did not see it for herself.”“I think its a problem because there is more to parenting than just feeding and clothing,” said VerMaas. “You have to protect your children from predators.” The defendant's attorney, Gregory Kratz, asked for probation for his client, noting she had no criminal history. He said, “She's accepted responsibility for this.”Kratz noted that his client has lost her home and job and said that this matter had “torn her family apart.”“I'm not going to give you prob ation,” said Judge Bauer to the defendant. “The court takes very seriously crimes against children.”Bobbi Myers was sentenced to 180 days for child abuse and 90 days for failing to report. The sentences will run concurrently. Myers has 24 days credit for time served. Myers was then remanded to the custody of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.The case against Brandon Myers is ongoing. Another hearing in his case is scheduled for March 3, 2025. He is currently free on a $75,000 bond.
