Fairbury Woman Pleads Guilty,Sentenced To Time Served

Courtney Nicholson, 35, of Fairbury, was sentenced to 365 day in jail in Jefferson County Court on Wednesday, December 15, with credit for 396 days time served. She was released from custody that same day. Linda Bauer was the presiding judge.Nicholson was originally charged with first degree assault and use deadly weapon to commit a felony, both class 2 felonies subject to a possible penalty of up to 50 years in prison. In accordance with a plea agreement, the defendant pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of third degree assault, a class 1 misdemeanor punishable by no more than one year in jail, which Nicholson has already served.According to the Warrantless Arrest Affidavit and a press release issued by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, on the date of June 21, 2020, Jefferson County Communications received multiple 911 calls reporting a stabbing at an apartment complex located at the 400 block of 7th Street in Fairbury Deputies arrived on the scene at approximately 9:21 p.m. The victim was located and transported to Jefferson Community Health and Life and treated for her injuries.Deputies were able to contain the initial scene and Sheriff’s Office then received a call that Courtney Nicholson was located two blocks to the north at another apartment complex, allegedly making threats to residents there. At this time Deputies went to that area and Courtney Nicholson was located by Deputies. After a brief struggle, Courtney was taken into custody. She was then placed into emergency protective custody and transported to Bryan Health in Lincoln.County Attorney Joseph Casson had previously declined to press charges. However, a warrant was issued for Nicholson's arrest on October 12, 2020, by Judea Bauer.On March 10 of this year, Judge Bauer ruled the defendant was not competent to stand trial and ordered Nicholson committed to the Lincoln Regional Center. On November 24, the judge ruled the defendant's competency had been restored.
