Fairbury Woman Pleads Not Guilty to Multiple Assaults

A Fairbury woman has pleaded not guilty to multiple assault charges.Abigail J. Weidenhaft, age 19, of Fairbury, appeared on two separate but related cases in Jefferson County Court on Wednesday, October 17, 2023. Linda Bauer was the presiding judge.In the first case, Weidenhaft is charged with two counts of third degree assault, each a class 1 misdemeanor punishable by one year in jail and a $1,000 fine for each charge.On Thursday, August 31, at approximately 10:20 a.m., deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff's office were dispatched to the Capri Motel in response to a 911 call. Shortly after, a second 911 call was received and reported a fight.Weidenhaft left the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement.According to the arrest affidavit, deputies were shown a cell phone video of the incident.Deputies made contact with Weidenhaft later that day at her residence and she was placed under arrest.In the second case, the defendant is charged with another count of third degree assault; unauthorized use of a vehicle, a class 3 misdemeanor punishable by three months in jail and a $500 fine; and child abuse by negligently permitting a minor child to be placed in a situation that endangers his or her life or physical or mental health, also a class 1 misdemeanor.On Tuesday, September 5, Jefferson County deputies were dispatched to a residence in Fairbury at approximately 1:16 p.m., in response to a report of a disturbance. The reporting party indicated Weidenhaft took his truck without permission.According to the arrest affidavit, the defendant was located later that day at McNish Park and arrested.The defendant is currently free on a $3,500 (10 percent) bond at this time. Through her attorney, Public Defender Scott Gropp, she requested that a no-contact provision be lifted. County Attorney Joseph Casson did not object and the judge granted the request.Another hearing is scheduled for October 16, 2023.
