A physical altercation between two students occurred at FPS Junior-Senior High School Thursday morning, November 18. High School Principal Sean Molloy sent out a noticed to parents later that day that said, in part, “This is the first time this school year that we’ve had an incident of this nature. Per the Fairbury Jr-Sr HS Handbook, there is zero tolerance for fighting. Staff and student safety is and will remain a top priority.”A third student video recorded the incident. Molloy said, “Additionally, students are not allowed to video each other without consent. The videoing of a fight, with intent to distribute on social media is not allowed.”In April of this year, a parents group spoke at the FPS Board of Education meeting about a variety of concerns. One of those concerns was violence in school. The school and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will be hiring a Schools Resources Officer (SRO) to provide a full time law enforcement presence in the schools.Molloy said in his notice, “In response to the incident mentioned above, I did request police presence during lunch. My request was not because of the possibility of another incident, but I wanted all to understand that any type of physical altercation will be taken seriously.”When asked for comment, FPS Superintendent Stephen Grizzle told FJN, “But it is not our practice to discuss student discipline matters. It was handled and the school day was not disrupted.”
