Family Flourishes At Cedarwood

Even though they may be retired, three Cedarwood residents in Fairbury are not slowing down.Cleo Dux, Eleanor Klaus and Homer Ward took time out of their schedules to talk about what makes Cedarwood so great for National Assisted Living Week, which will culminate in a special program on Sunday from 1-4. Dux has lived at Cedarwood for seven years, Klaus 12 years and Ward and wife Maxine two years.When asked what made the facility special, all agreed it was the friendly staff, along with a plethora of activities.“The med aides are very friendly as is the whole staff,” Klaus said.Dux called the facility, ‘one big family.’ Ward has a unique view of living in Cedarwood, as he was on the JCH&L board during the planning and building of Cedarwood and was the Cedarwood board chairman for 20 years.“I am very proud of what has been done here,” Ward said.All three said it is never boring at Cedarwood. There are always activities going, with games ranging from bingo to cornhole and loads of entertainment with singers and much more.“There’s something every afternoon,” Klaus said. Other activities include bus rides to different events like going to restaurants and tours.Klaus and Dux noted that there are hairdressers available at the facility and they enjoy having manicures and pedicures, along with having their hair done on a regular basis.Ward said he and his wife enjoy living together in the facility and have made friends at Cedarwood.Dux agreed: “All my old friends have passed on, but I now have new old friends here.”For National Assisted Living Week, different eras were explored all week to spice up the activities at Cedarwood. Monday featured the 50’s/60’s-era with a soda fountain and Hula-Hoop contest and Ron Hilligas provided music trivia on Tuesday. A show-and-tell event capped activities today (Wednesday) with a big event planned for Sunday. An open house will be held from 1-4 on Sunday at Cedarwood with a special ceremony at 2 p.m. at the large tent on the Cedarwood campus.“I feel we have a really good plan here for almost any situation,” Ward said. “There is really anything you want to do here.” Jan Klaus of Cedarwood explained, “Families are always welcome here and residents can come and go when they want to, there is always just so much going on around here.”
