Fatal Accident On Highway 4

A two-vehicle accident over the weekend on Highway 4 resulted in one fatality.At 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 19, 2022, the Jefferson County 911 Center received a 911 call reporting an accident on Highway 4, approximately one quarter mile west of Highway 15. Upon arrival, emergency crews found one vehicle, a 2016 Chevy Cruz was driven by 23-year-old Marshal Holtzclaw of Alexandria, was on fire and had also set fire to the surrounding grass. At one point, a column of smoke could be seen more than two miles away.Firefighters at the scene quickly extinguished the blaze but the vehicle was completely gutted by fire.Holtzclaw had succumbed to injuries sustained during the collision and was pronounced deceased by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at the time of arrival. The second vehicle, a 2020 Henderson dump truck driven by 43-year-old Shane Airey of Checotah, Oklahoma, was found overturned in the north ditch. Airey was transported by ambulance to Jefferson Community Health and Life and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.During the initial investigation of the accident, it was determined that Holtzclaw was traveling west on Highway 4, and Airey was traveling East on Highway 4 at the time of the head on collision. That section of Highway 4 was closed to through traffic while the investigation and cleanup proceeded.The Nebraska State Patrol was contacted to reconstruct the accident scene and the incident is still under investigation. Other responding agencies included the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County Emergency Management, Jefferson County Rescue, Daykin Fire and Rescue, and Jefferson County Ambulance District #33.
