Faulty Valve At Jansen’s Water Tower To Be Repaired Next Week, Hopefully Without Disrupting Water Service

By Gordon HopkinsThe latest update from Jansen Village Board chairperson Carol Ellis is that the repair of a faulty valve under the water tower will likely not result in a disruption of water service, something that was of concern.Ellis told FJN, “Some good news. No interruptions. But we won’t be able to do any valve work until next Monday.”This week and last, plumbers were at the water tower, excavating the site of the valve in preparation for the new valve when it is delivered Monday.To avoid any disruption of service, Ellis explained, “It’s a more expensive option but the valve is installed while the system is still functioning. After the valve is placed, the water tower will be drained so the secondary valve can be rebuilt. Then we will have our redundant valves in place and hopefully not have to address the issue again.”Ellis added, “So when the new valve is installed, the village will be running directly off the well.”The Village has a contract with Viking Industrial Painting, the company that painted the Jansen water tower in 2020, to provide maintenance for the village’s water tower. According to a representative with Viking, repair of the valve is not included as part of the contract as the valve is not, technically, part of the water tower.Viking was scheduled to clean the tower on Thursday, October 19. However, the water tower could not be drained due to the faulty valve. Unfortunately, due to dropping temperatures, Ellis indicated the repairs will likely not be completed in time for the cleaning to be rescheduled for this year and will have to be rescheduled for next spring.
