FHS One Game Away From State

The Fairbury Jeffs volleyball team fought hard against Columbus Lakeview but fell 3-0 in the district C1-4 final, 12-25, 18-25, 14-25.A well rounded team in all aspects of the game, the Jeffs assists were led by the duo of senior Brooke Schmidt and junior Allison Davis as Schmidt had found her teammates for 420 assists and Davis found her teammates with 311 assists this season.The set up for those assists was made possible the great first passing on the serves received with junior Mikya Lierman leading the team with 532, junior Hannah Robertson received 245 serves, and junior Alyse Petersen received 162 serves.On the receiving end of those passes, the Jeffs’ main source of offense came from the one-two punch combo of junior Emily Huss and senior Karly McCord, as well as Hannah Robertson and Allison Davis joining the endeavor of being on the attack. Huss was able to lead the Jeffs with 314 kills, and McCord had 278 kills, the duo had often left teams struggling to find an answer to stop them.Hannah Robertson made the most out of the opportunities that came her way as she ended the season with 108 kills, and Allison Davis ended with 103 that added to the headache of figuring out the Jeffs offensive options. Allison Davis was involved in all aspects of the game and it was apparent as she led the Jeffs with 50 aces being served. Brooke Schmidt was able to serve 35 aces, Karly McCord served 29 aces, and Alyse Petersen was able to serve up 20 aces.It could be said that the Jeffs best qualities came from their offense, however the argument for their defense would be evident with the front wall that often awaited other teams. Emily Huss led that charge getting 80 total blocks on the year. Karly McCord came in second with blocks getting 47, and Brooke Schmidt contributed to the front wall as well with 36 blocks.The front wall, often intimidating, wasn’t alone in what was a complete team defense as the Jeffs left no point go without battle if a team managed to get past the front wall. That effort was apparent with the many hits that would be dug up and Mikya Lierman led that example as she was able to get 357 digs to lead the team. Allison Davis was able to get past 200 digs ending the season with 208. Hannah Robertson would get 178 digs, Brooke Schmidt showed great reactions getting 165 digs, and Alyse Petersen managed 148 digs.The Fairbury Jeffs were able to claim the SNC league championship while only losing two sets in the tournament.Winning the league championship was an accomplishment that hasn’t been done by Fairbury in over a decade’s time.Fairbury Jeffs end the season with a 23-9 record and a perfect 4-0 in league play, sub-district champions sweeping in both rounds, and district runner-up.
