Final Push for 2022 Petition Initiatives

By Gordon HopkinsThursday, July 7, is the deadline to submit petition signatures for initiatives to be placed on the ballot for the 2022 general election.Nebraska is one of 24 states that allow citizens to initiate legislation through the petition process. The petition process can be a powerful tool for bypassing the state government when an initiative is popular with voters but not necessarily with those in power. In recent years, both casino gambling and expanded Medicare coverage have become law in Nebraska despite vehement opposition by Governor Pete Ricketts but were approved by voters.With the deadline looming, there has been a major push to collect the final needed signatures throughout the state, including in Fairbury. A number of volunteers have been seen in town this week collecting signatures.There are 16 petitions being circulated, either for state statute or constitutional amendments:• Medical Marijuana Constitutional Amendment• Nebraska Cannabis Constitutional Amendment• Voter ID Constitutional Amendment• Nebraska Minimum Wage Initiative• Medical Cannabis Patient Protection Initiative• Medical Cannabis Regulation Initiative• Full Access Conceal Carry Weapon Constitutional Amendment• Medical Freedom Constitutional Amendment• Replacing the Department of Education Constitutional Amendment• Governor Override Constitutional Amendment• Election Integrity Judicial Panel Constitutional Amendment• Motorcycle Helmet Initiative• Justifiable Force Immunity Constitutional Amendment• Constitutional Carry Constitutional Amendment• Stand Your Ground Constitutional Amendment• Reserve Militia in Nebraska Constitutional Amendment
