Fire At Whispering Acres

By Gordon HopkinsA fire early Monday morning at Whispering Acres Trails and Treasures destroyed a farm house, attached garage and pond building that housed several animals. Proprietors Jill and Jamie Kuzelka got out safely.At approximately 4:30 a.m. Monday morning, Plymouth, Diller, Jansen, and Fairbury Rural Fire Departments were paged to a house on fire at Whispering Acres. Jeff Nelson with Diller Fire was the Incident Commander. According to Nelson, “When Diller Fire arrived on scene, the house was already fully engulfed in flames. Crews from the four departments worked on the fire, bringing it under control at about 7 a.m.” Whispering Acres Tails and Treasures is a non-profit 501(c)3 that provides Equine Assisted Learning (EAL), which is an educational program that is facilitated with individual or small group formats that focuses on activities with horses. Due to the dearth of other mental health resources in the area, Jefferson County Commissioners have been strong supporters of Whispering Acres. While everyone made it out of the house safely and with no injuries, the Kuzelkas were left with just the clothes on their backs and one cell phone. Donations are being collected at 801 Ash St. Fairbury or via Venmo @Whisperingacres. The fire is under investigation. No additional information was available as of press time.According to family member Rhonda Kuzelka, the horses, rabbits and other larger animals are safe as they were in the barn, which was not burned. The Kuzelkas lost the smaller caged animals, such as reptiles, turtles and fish, which were being kept in a garage for the winter.
