FJN Taking Part In UNL Rural Internship Program

The Fairbury Journal-News is excited to introduce our summer interns through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Rural Internship Program. Theodore Ball. UNL’s Rural Internship program was made possible through the Stanton Foundation Grant as 30 College of Journalism and Mass Communications students were given the opportunity to impact nine local Nebraska communities. The options for internships vary. Newspapers, news stations and hospitals were all made available through the program. Theodore Ball is a double major in journalism and sports media with a minor in history. Ball’s passion for journalism started in high school through a mentor and English Teacher Gretchen Monroe. Ball completed his first ever publishing, “Faith Like Cruz”, in the school newsletter. His love for the profession grew from there. Ball would like to focus on photo and video journalism within the field. He has worked on producing and editing video as well as running many stations behind the scenes (Audio, Camera work, Technical Director) for Nebraska Nightly, an experience lab at UNL. His work can be found on the NN YouTube.The summer intern’s job at the newspaper is to write stories, edit and produce news packages and take photos. The writings will be found in the Fairbury Journal-News’ papers and his videos on the Fairbury Journal-News’ Facebook. Theodore Ball’s hobbies include hanging out with friends and family, playing videogames, watching political streamers, working out and playing sports. Jathesn I am Jathesn Xretqalin. Being from Omaha, Nebraska, a city where individuals from all walks of life interact every day, I grew up caring about community. Coming from a Latino household with both Indigenous and Spanish roots, community meant the constant parties with the carne asadas to the free events where non-profits, churches and streets celebrate events like Cinco de Mayo, parades and other religious celebrations. A city where diversity meets foreign cuisine. As a Mexican-American student who has a passion for getting involved in the community, I knew I had to study for a degree that could be impactful. Therefore, I put a lot of effort in my schooling resulting in getting a full-ride to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where I became an Advertising and Public Relations major under the journalism school.Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of getting internship opportunities such as a Food and Nutrition Access intern at Nebraska Appleseed where I was able to create cool social media posts, videos and swag such as stickers for the Nebraska Nutritional Heroes event where nutritional staff all around Nebraska are recognized for their amazing work! My hobbies include taking walks around nature, reading self-care books and cooking new recipes! Some of my best recipes have been fusion foods like Chicken Tikka Masala Pasta or cheddar curry mac and cheese! I am very honored to be part of this year’s 2024 Rural Internship Cohort serving the Fairbury Journal News as a bilingual reporter. Being both fluent in Spanish and English, I can’t wait to meet people in the community and elevate the rich stories that as Nebraskan’s we carry with ourselves each and every day!
