Friday Night Storms Wreak Havoc in Southern Gage County

Last Friday and Saturday saw weather that brought cooler temperatures and desperately needed precipitation to the area. Not everything brought by the weather was welcome, however. Especially in southern Gage County.Thunderstorms Friday, April 14, brought with it torrential rains, high winds and even hail. Some people lost electricity. South of Wymore, near Highway 8, winds reportedly snapped trees and damaged roofs.Lisa Wiegand, Gage County Emergency Manager, reported, “We had some outbuilding damage north of Barneston and along Plum Road. Power outages were experienced south of Highway 136 in the rural areas, including towns of Barneston and Odell north to Highway 136.”One-and-a-half miles north of Barneston, Ann Bledsoe said the roof of a barn was partially pulled off by the wind.Bledsoe told FJN that one of the barn doors was lifted up over 30-foot cedar trees and found 200 yards south-southeast in a field, “One is stuck in trees closer to the barn. Our chickens were sucked up and out of their pen. All turned up the following morning unharmed.”“A cattle panel and a tubular gate that were laying flat on the ground were thrown 30 yards,” said Bledsoe.Gage County Supervisor Don Schuller told FJN, “My wife and I were trying to hold the cover from the hot tub from blowing away. The straps holding it down broke. The storm came up very fast. Just a few sprinkles received during the storm. Our rain came later that night. Our electricity was off approximately 12 hours.”The Southeast Communications Center in Beatrice received a report of a possible funnel cloud but this was not confirmed.
