Gage County Committee and Board Meetings

By Don Schuller 10/17/22 Committee meeting:Highway Superintendent Mark Kuhnke received two quotes for removal of three trees at the Pleasant Hill/Frog Pond Cemetery located east of Blue Springs on the B-Line near the Pawnee County border. These quotes were $5600 and $6500. At this time approval to complete work has not been given.10/19/22 Regular meeting: During the Finance and Insurance report, County Attorney Roger Harris reported a law suit has been filed against the election commissioners of the 93 counties in Nebraska, including County Clerk Dawn Hill. Nebraska Intergovernmental Risk Management Association’s (NIRMA), our insurance company, attorneys will handle the situation. Mr Harris does not expect this law suit to get anywhere but needs to be handled with due diligence. Unfortunately, it will cost tax payers across the state money.Road and Bridge Committee Chairman Terry Jurgens reported Highway 8 from Highway 112 west to Jefferson County border will be receiving improvements by the State. The survey has been completed. It is not known when construction is scheduled. Mr. Jurgens has spoken with the state highway engineer and there are plans to include turn lanes for both streets going into Odell from highway 8. This is a much needed safety improvement. Supervisor Emily Haxby is researching the possibility of grants for hard surfacing priority roads in Gage County. She is including all roads on the one and six year plan for hard surfacing. Mrs. Haxby indicated to me this includes 162 Road on the west side of Virginia from highway 4 and 3 miles south.Angie Bruna, Beatrice Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, introduced Megan Bartz, the newly hired Tourism Coordinator. Ms. Bartz reported, among other items, that lodging had a good year. The lodging tax receipts are up 45% this year from the previous year.
