Girls Strive For Berth At State Tournament

Fairbury JeffsIt was so nice she had to do it twice as it was quite a weekend for senior Makena Schramm, becoming a two-time district champion competing in the 190-pound divsion.At state last year at 185-pounds Schramm finished runner-up. When asked what had happened, Schramm didn’t beat around the bush or mince any words on her performance, “I had forgotten how to wrestle, can you put that in the news? I want to have a reminder out there for myself to never let that happen again.”Since that point she’s flipped a switch and has been on a tear as that loss seemingly took her to the next level.Fast forward to the end of this season with Schramm still displaying an elite focus, grit and determination since that loss as she’s looked and lived up to the nickname that’s followed her for the last two years as “the Beast” not only surpassed the 75 wins mark, pushed pass 100 takedowns, but is also undefeated with a record of (35-0) with only two of her victories not being by pinfall as Schramm is looking more than ready heading into state wrestling.If there was ever an example or lesson behind the act of progression, then Heidi Ramos for the last two years would be an obvious one.This year the confidence in Ramos has been more than evident with each match. The pieces to the puzzle are coming together in time as Heidi Ramos would go 2-2 on the day but unable to qualify for state.Though not the desired results, Ramos can hold her chin up proudly with a 23-17 record. For first year competitor wrestler sophomore Mailee Garner at 125-pounds, the first year would be a jump on the scene with an aggression and great aptitude in the first year of competing in wrestling.With plenty of potential in the future, the foundation of a solid first year has been evident with Garner, though unable to qualify to state, finished 3-2 with a record of 19-14 with a solid foundation of work to build off in the coming times. Finally freshman Gabrielle Herrera may not have had the season she had hoped for, but the districts was not in vain. Despite being the underdog, it all came together as Herrera’s first pin of the season came by upsetting the number three in the 145-pound class, as she finished 2-2 on the day.Head Coach Dominique Cherry was able to speak about the team and Herrera saying, “Man, as a coach, I couldn’t be more proud of the girls. Gabby had put in so much hard work and throughout the entire season, it’s just been wrong turns and bad luck. She turned left instead of right, pushed instead of pulled, but was always right there, one move to take those wins more than she knows it or would ever believe it. At districts it finally worked out in her favor, I lost my voice screaming when she secured that pin and any coach would recognize it because it was different, she went through so much adversity and to see her finally connect the dots and get that win was amazing.Heidi and MaiLee won’t be easy on themselves, but they did incredible. Heidi is there, I mean it’s right there, just has few more things to work on and she’ll be punching her ticket to state, and MaiLee, I told her it’s your first year and you’ve done all that you did with that record, I’m excited to see what she’s going to do next year. Gosh, for Makena it’s keeping her relaxed, she works herself up sometimes and we as the coaches try to watch that. She’s been on a mission and now she has the chance to finish it, I believe her, the coaches do, but we’ll take it one match a time at state.”Thayer CentralThe Thayer Central Lady Titans were unable to send anyone to state, but have some high notes on the weekend and season for the first year officially as wrestling is a part of their school.Braelyn Degenhardt led the charge on the weekend going 3-2 as she ended her season with a record of 15-11, Kinley Casey finished the year 12-11, Savanna Wiedel and Izabella Habana-Lindeman each secured a win going 1-2 on the weekend. Wiedel finished 9-14, and Habana-Lindeman 9-12, JaeLynn Watson finished 4-16 and Kaylee Engle went 1-8 on the season.Wilber-ClatoniaWilber-Clatonia had one representative with Ann Hegwald competing at 140-pounds and finished her season with a record of 4-9.
