The cooling tower just south of the Fairbury Municipal Power Plant at 121 3rd Street has been dismantled. At a meeting on Tuesday, November 16, the Fairbury City Council voted to demolish the structure.This cooling tower was designed to cool the water that fed the power plant when necessary. According to City Administrator Robert Messbarger, even when the power plant was operational, the cooling tower was rarely utilized. The tower was in a decaying state and Messbarger indicated there was no possibility of it being functional again. Messbarger said, “Staff is working on cleaning up the property south the power plant. There's a lot of old buildings down there. It's also a liability issue. They've had kids and stuff climbing on those towers.”The City of Fairbury began by removing the asbestos panels that surrounded the cooling tower. The panels were been tested and have been found to contain asbestos. Messbarger said, “The state of Nebraska did approve us to remove this on our own, which is going to be a big cost reduction compared to hiring it out.”Once the panels were removed, the Streets and Parks Department were be able to demolish the rest of the building as usual. Messbarger said, “And so estimated total cost to tear down the building is approximately $7,000.”The estimated cost of removal and disposal of the panels containing asbestos is $4,000. Demolition of the remainder of the building is expected to cost $3,000. The amount allocated in this year's budget for maintenance of grounds is $12,500, which includes this project.
