Good Samaritan Spots Injured Man Under a Bridge

A man fell from a bridge at the local dam Thursday evening and was injured. He was not immediately visible from the location where he landed and the man's situation could have been much worse were it not for a good Samaritan who happened by, walking her dog.September 28, 2023 at approximately 7:10 p.m., the Jefferson County Dispatch received a 911 call in reference to a male individual who was located underneath the Fairbury City Dam River walking path bridge and was injured.The sun was going down but the Rescue 17 vehicle is equipped with powerful floodlights, used to illuminate the scene.Law Enforcement, EMS, and Fire personnel were dispatched to the scene. When deputies arrived, they located a 23-year-old male that was under the bridge, lying in approximately six inches of water.The man was conscious and breathing but, according to the Sheriff’s Office, it was clear that he had been injured after falling from the elevated walking path bridge.Rescue personnel from the Jefferson County Ambulance and Fairbury Rural Fire Department treated and removed the man from the river. He was transported to Jefferson Community Health and Life and later transferred by ambulance to a Lincoln Hospital for non life-threatening injuries.FJN spoke to a witness at the scene. She had been walking her dog and saw the man standing near the bridge, “I didn't think anything of it at the time.”Passing by the same location a short while later as she was returning, she said she no longer saw the man, “ A little voice inside my head told me I should take a peek.”She approached and saw the injured man under the bridge and then called 911.The events that lead up to the male falling are still under investigation at this time.
