Governor Responds To Survey

By Gordon HopkinsGovernor Jim Pillen has cited results of a recent poll as support for his goal of a 40 percent reduction in property tax. The statewide poll was conducted by New Bridge Strategy and backed by the Nebraska Association of County Officials (NACO) and the League of Nebraska Municipalities.According to a statement released by the governor’s office, “Governor Jim Pillen says a new survey confirms what he has heard repeatedly from taxpayers across Nebraska. They want property tax relief and would support a state sales tax adjustment to make it happen. That’s the response of three-in-five voters surveyed. Not only that, but respondents also indicated they viewed property taxes as being much higher than state sales tax.” The governor said, “This report clearly indicates that this is the strongest priority for Nebraskans, who recognize we must reform current policies, if we are to be competitive with other states and continue to attract new workers to our state.”NACO and the League of Nebraska Municipalities held a joint press conference on Thursday, February 15, 2024, at the Capitol Rotunda in Lincoln, to present the results of the poll.While both NACO and the League are supportive of the governor’s goal to reduce property taxes, they emphasize that they want to see the revenue lost due to those tax cuts be replaced. Local officials want to ensure property tax relief does not come at the expense of local services. Jefferson County Commissioner Mark Schoenrock also serves on the NACO Board. He represented NACO during the press conference and in his opening statement said, “We are committed to work with Governor Pillen and the legislature to accomplish the objective of tax reform for all Nebraskans and to ensure that our local and county governments will continue to have the revenue needed to provide essential services to our fellow citizens.”Schoenrock and other county officials met with the governor to discuss property tax relief Tuesday, February 20. On February 14, Governor Pillen announced his appointment of Sarah Scott as state property tax administrator. Scott currently leads the field operations team within the Property Assessment Division at the Nebraska Department of Revenue (DOR).“Sarah has had several positions with the Department of Revenue over the last 15 years. She has expertise in tax assessment, analytics, interpreting statute and regulations as well as training county assessors on a variety of processes,” said Gov. Pillen. “Her broad range of experience makes her a great leader for the agency in this key role.”
