Griffins Heading To State

The Diller-Odell Lady Griffins punch their ticket to State basketball with a Class D1-7 championship victory of a final score 55-49 against Lourdes Central Catholic on Friday, February 28.In what was a great test for the hosts as D-O earned every bit of this win. A back and forth affair, a battle in which the Lady Griffins stumbled here and there, still held on to a lead when one of the biggest challenges of the season would present itself. In the fourth quarter, just at the five minute and forty second mark, Myleigh Weers would foul out with a charging foul on the baseline, D-O clinging to a 42-36 lead.Weers, as the point guard taking the helm did a bit of everything for the team. In the Sub-District final, Myleigh would surpass the 2k career point mark with her 12th game of the year with 25 or more points scored in a game as she would have 32 in Sub-District. For the District final, an early exit had Weers scoring 14 points along with six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Then, forty seconds later, another Lady Griffin with that being Baileigh Vilda would also foul out, D-O still leading 44-41.Vilda had seven points, two rebounds and one assist. With the two Lady Griffins who usually lead the charge on the glass, now on the bench, D-O was looking for answers.Now facing a full court press, D-O would give up the lead, but took it back in the next four minutes being trade-offs. Some later heroics on the free-throw line by Hailee Miller and Jaedyn Hajek would push Lady Griffins to victory for the Class D1-7 final.Top efforts from the game, Ashley Duis was able to contribute quite well offensively scoring 14 points, with three rebounds, three assists and one steal. Berkelee Beekman just missed scoring double digits as she had nine points, four rebounds and one assist. Hailee Miller would bring down a team leading seven rebounds, have two steals and score five points. Jaedyn Hajek scored four points, had two rebounds, one assist and three steals.Aidan McKinney led the defensive effort with five steals, had five rebounds, one assist and two points scored.Diller-Odell enters the tournament as the number seven seed with a record of (18-7), and will look to a six o’clock match up on Wednesday (today) for the first round of state basketball as they take on the number two seed Elm Creek. Titans Just Miss StateThe Thayer Central Lady Titans have their season come to an end as they would fall to Southern Valley in the Class C2-7 final with a score reaching 40-44 on Friday, February 28.Top efforts for Thayer Central came by way of Paige Tietjen scoring a team leading 18 points, grabbing eight rebounds and had three steals. Leah Havel scored nine points, had four rebounds, a team leading four assists and one steal.Olivia Wiedel was able to score eight points, had two rebounds and two steals. Piper Havel would score two points, had a team leading 11 rebounds, one steal and three blocks.Thayer Central ends their year with a record of (18-6) as SNC runner-up, Class C2-9 Sub-District champions and Class C2-7 District runner-up. Boys:Jeffs Drop ToConestogaThe Fairbury Jeffs have their season come to an end as they fell to Conestoga in their first round of the Class C1-1 Sub-District on Tuesday, February 25 with the final score reaching 53-59.Notable efforts from that game came by Korey Nippert scoring a team leading 15 points, grabbed five rebounds, had two assists and one steal. Brodie Prellwitz scored 11 points, had five rebounds, two assists and one steal.CJ Goeking was able to score nine points and came done with a team leading seven rebounds, had three assists, one steal and one block.With the loss bringing their season to an end, Fairbury has their record stand at (9-15).W-C Picks Up Win At Sub-DistrictsThe Wilber-Clatonia Wolverines go 1-1 in the Class C1-3 Sub-District as they win in the first round against Raymond Central on Tuesday, February 25 as that score reached 50-33.W-C would fall in the quarterfinal against Auburn on Thursday, February 27 with that score reaching 36-65.The Wolverines end their season with a record of (13-13). Trojans DownTekamah-HermanThe Tri County Trojans pull off a first round win in the Class C2-1 Sub-District against Tekamah-Herman on Monday, February 24 as the final score reached 59-38, but would fall to Freeman in the quarterfinal with that score reaching 23-74 on Tuesday, February 25.With the loss bringing their season to an end, Tri County has their record stand at (9-15). Wood River Can’t Hang With TitansThe Thayer Central Titans go 1-1 in the Class C2-7 Sub-District as they would grab a victory against Wood River with that final score coming to 66-49 on Tuesday, February 25th. The Titans moved onto the finals as they would face Grand Island Central Catholic on Thursday, February 27th, but would lose that game with a final score 35-54. With the loss bringing their season to an end, Thayer Central has their record at (16-8), SNC runner-up and Class C2-7 Sub-District runner-up.
