Groundwater Increase Reported

The fall 2025 water table showed a modest but encouraging increase compared to the previous year’s measurements. This marks the first rise in fall static water levels since the unusually wet year of 2019, breaking a four-year pattern of gradual decline or stagnation across much of the district. According to monitoring conducted by the Little Blue Natural Resources District (NRD), Geologic Area 1 recorded an average rise of 0.21 feet, or approximately 2 ½ inches). Geologic Area 2 experienced an even larger average gain of 0.31 feet, or approximately 3 3/4 inches. While these changes may appear small, even modest increases in static water levels can signal improved aquifer conditions and reduced seasonal stress on groundwater supplies. District staff attribute the uptick largely to this past growing season’s time and well-distributed rainfall, which reduced the need for agricultural irrigation across broad portions of the Little Blue NRD. With producers relying less on groundwater pumping to support crops, more water remained in the aquifer, helping stabilize and elevate fall measurements.The NRD notes that these fall increases provide a positive baseline heading into the winter recharge period. Winter and early spring moisture—whether from snowfall, rain, or slow-melting ice—plays a crucial role in replenishing the aquifer at a time when crop demand is minimal and evaporation rates are low.The district is optimistic that continued precipitation over the non-growing season will further bolster groundwater levels heading into spring 2026. Overall, the rise in the fall 2025 static water levels offers a welcome sign of resilience for the district’s groundwater resources.
