Harlan Herman Meyer

Harlan Herman Meyer was born on May 30, 1946, in Tobias, NE, to Herman and Viola (Haack) Meyer. He peacefully passed away on July 9, 2024, at Heritage Crossings in Geneva, at the age of 78.Harlan was baptized into the Christian faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Tobias and confirmed there on April 10, 1960. He attended grade school at Zion Lutheran's original site south of Tobias and later graduated from Tobias High School in 1964. During his school years, Harlan participated in football, basketball, and track, narrowly missing a state qualification in the one-mile event. After high school, he briefly attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before returning to assist his father on the family farm. Harlan was known for his sociable nature and enjoyed spending time playing cards with friends in town, often impressing them and his grandchildren with his "magic" card tricks. On August 14, 1976, Harlan married Donna Reinke, and together they had three sons: Heath, Nathan, and Zachary. Harlan dedicated over fifty years to farming and spent twenty-five years as a crop adjuster, forging connections with farmers across Nebraska and Kansas. He tended to hogs, cattle, and crops including wheat, oats, milo, soybeans, and corn. Harlan enjoyed watching his boys throw straw bales on the trailer and pulling pigs out of the crates. An avid sports enthusiast, Harlan loved playing basketball with his nephews in the barn loft and coaching the Zion Tigers' 5th-8th grade basketball team for several years. He loved watching and following the statistics of the Huskers and Meridian Mustangs, and cheered on his sons' athletic endeavors—Heath in football, basketball, and baseball; Nathan in football, wrestling, and baseball; and Zachary in basketball, wrestling, and golf. Later in life, he enjoyed watching his grandkids’ activities. He was especially proud to attend his grandson Trevor's wedding in December.Harlan is survived by his sons Heath (Kathryn) and their children Lily, Holden, and Austin of Thornton, CO; Nathan (Jodi) and their children Trevor (Abigail), Travis, and Evelyn of Geneva; and Zachary and his daughter Ella of Tobias. He is also survived by nephews Lonnie (Janet), Lyle (Kelly), Lynn, nephew-in-law Joe Selig, niece-in-law Kris Miller, and Lowell (Rebecca) Miller. Harlan was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Viola, sister Ardella (Clel) Miller, nephew Larry Miller, and niece Patricia Selig. A Funeral Service for Harlan was held on Saturday, July 13, at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Tobias, with Pastor Karl Hollibaugh presiding.Organist, Becky Hollibaugh, accompanied the congregation as they sang, “Children Of The Heavenly Father”, “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” and “Amazing Grace”Pallbearers included Heath Meyer, Nathan Meyer, Zachary Meyer, Lonnie Miller, Lynn Miller and Lyle Miller.Graveside Services were conducted following the funeral service at the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Tobias.Memorials were directed to the Tobias Gym for upkeep or Zion Lutheran Church General Fund.Farmer & Son Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.
