Hunters Worry About Proposed Disc Golf Course

By Gordon HopkinsConcerns were recently raised by members of he public at a meeting of the Fairbury City Council on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, regarding the 18-hole disc golf course coming to Crystal Springs Park near Fairbury. The Fairbury City Council voted to go forward with the project at a meeting on Tuesday, December 20, 2022. Councilperson Doug Brown said he asked for the item to be on the agenda because, “When we approved the disc golf course here recently at Crystal Springs, I think we overlooked our neighbors. We have four neighbors adjacent to that, to the northeast part of the course.”One of those neighbors is Eric Prellwitz, who spoke at the meeting, “I own 14 acres that goes right along the Crystal Springs entrance and then back into the trees up to the creek. I don’t have no problem, I guess, with the golf course going in. I am a little disappointed. We have to put it right on my property line as we do go fishing back there, hunting. And when it comes to hunting, the biggest course of, I guess, concern is rifle season. We are permitted to rifle hunt there.”Prellwitz said, “And I don’t think we’re talking about scaring the deer away or ruining the hunting. I think we’re talking about the safety of these people doing, you know, playing this course.”Prellwitz recommended closing the course during hunting seasons.“It’s not just rifle season. That’s a week long, you know. You go into muzzle loader season which is the whole month of December,” said Prellwitz. “And then you got 15 days into January where it’s the doe only season. And I just I feel like the course should be closed for a certain period of time for the public safety and to respect the neighboring properties.” Mayor Brown said, “I’ll throw my opinion out there. I got no problem closing the course from November 1 to February 1. I don’t think we’re going to impact hardly any activity out there from the disc golf guys.”The city council opted not to close the entire course but just holes nine through 16 from November 1 to February 1.Fairbury also has a nine-hole disc golf course in McNish Park.
