Jansen Switches Trash Collection Vendors

By Gordon HopkinsThe Jansen Village Board voted to sign a five-year contract with Schmidt’s Trucking and Sanitation of Fairbury to provide trash collection services for the village at a meeting on Monday, November 13, 2023. The new service will begin in 2024.Schmidt’s was the only bid submitted. The village’s current vendor, the City of Fairbury, did not submit a bid.The Fairbury City Council was scheduled to review trash collection rates and consider making a change the next council meeting on Tuesday, November 21.When asked about a possible change to trash collection rates, Fairbury Mayor Spencer Brown told FJN, “I have not seen anything come across my desk with regard to changing rates. However, operating costs continue to go up so it is not unlikely that there will be an adjustment.”The Fairbury City Council meeting was not held until after FJN went to press, so the results of any vote were not available as of press time. City Councilperson Brad Kuzelka told FJN prior to the meeting that a three percent increase for residential pickup and a five dollar increase for dumpsters was recommended by city staff, “Sounds reasonable considering the inflation we’re dealing with. Probably should be more but sanitation has been in a good financial position for quite a while. I will most likely be in favor unless someone has something to say at the meeting.”The Jansen Village Board opted not to wait until after Fairbury had decided on rates because Schmidt’s bid was already lower that Fairbury’s current rates. Jansen Village Board chairperson Carol Ellis said, “We opted to change back to Schmidt and save the residents a couple bucks a month.”Schmidt’s Trucking and Sanitation bid was $17 per household. Fairbury’s current rates in Jansen are $22.50 per household.
