Jefferson and Gage County Bridge Projects Get Matching State Funds

Bridges in both Jefferson and Gage Counties will benefit from state funding.On Friday, December 13, 2024, the Nebraska Department of Transportation, (NDOT) announced 11 proposals have been selected for funding in the ninth round of the County Bridge Match Program (CBMP).Included in those projects is the Jefferson County bridge on PWF Road, just west of the Gage County line. Work on the bridge is anticipated to cost approximately $955,000. The bridge match will reimburse $500,000.This bridge is just part of a larger effort to repair the PWF Road. After the announcement from NDOT, Jefferson County Commissioner Mark Schoenrock said, “Now we hope that Olsson Engineering completes the environmental study promptly so that we can proceed with bid letting for the entire project.”Gage County will also be receiving funds. The bridge on the Chestnut Road, over Soap Creek, is estimated to cost and estimated $580,000. State funds will cover approximately $272,000. The bridge on 82nd Road, between Birch Road and Highway 41, is estimated to cost up to $488,000. State funds will cover approximately $228,000.The program was created under the 2016 Transportation Innovation Act (TIA), with its funding renewed through LB (Legislative Bill) 1030, which Governor Jim Pillen signed into law in April of 2024.The CBMP provides funding to counties for the innovative replacement and repair of deficient county bridges. NDOT selects applications based on established criteria which emphasizes significance of community impact to essential services, local economic activity and daily life. LB1030 also created a new working group for a more collaborative selection approach, ensuring voices of local experts are part of the decision for awards.The ninth Request for Proposals (RFP) was announced in September, with $4 million to be distributed to counties across Nebraska. Proposals were submitted by 46 counties and included 70 bridges.Since the program’s inception, the County Bridge Match Program has: Received 549 proposals of which 165 were selected. Repaired or replaced 385 bridges. Awarded over $34M to counties generating over $100M in construction activities.The CBMP funds 55 percent of eligible bridge construction cost, up to $500,000, with counties providing a 45 percent match. The Round Nine selected proposals include 11 counties and 15 bridges at a total estimated construction cost of $16.48 million, of which $4 million is from the CBMP.
