Jeffs Picking Up Energy

The was week full of beautiful weather and was a prime example of the roller-coaster sport that is baseball: One game everything is going your way and then the next few games can feel as if it’s a fight in quicksand, the more a team struggles, the quicker they sink.Despite the results the young Jeffs team have been showing great signs of energy and growth early in the season. The first game of the week was on Monday, April 3 as Fairbury was hosting Centennial.Falling behind was not the start they were hoping for as Centennial would score two runs in the first, but the Jeffs showed poise and patience as they would answer back with two of their own with Konrad Kuzelka scoring on the error as the courtesy runner, Brendon Runge was on base advancing to second on an error, would then steal third base before being brought in by Aldo Ramos single tying at two-two. Despite falling down 2-3 going into the bottom of the third, Fairbury was about to show how much jet fuel they’re prepared to use as soon as they’re on the base-pads.Utilizing any means of getting on the board again, Fairbury would go on to score 12 runs in the next four innings, with two runs in the third, one in the fourth, their biggest inning came from the fifth as they scored seven runs and added two more runs in the sixth to put the nail in the coffin with a 14-4 victory.The victory was made possible as the team racked up double digits with 16 stolen bases and 10 hits. Leading the charge was Brendon Runge going three for four with two doubles, three RBI, and three stolen bases. Aldo Ramos was able to join in going two for four while bringing in three RBI as well. Jakolbe Atkins, Jamison Runge, and CJ Goeking each contributed one hit.Atkins and Goeking along with Grady Chappell each finished with three stolen bases, Jamison Runge had two stolen bases, and Konrad Kuzelka had one as well. Blayne Schelbtizki took to the mound and secured the win by allowing only six hits, and four runs over six innings while walking only two, and striking out a sweet 16 in the outing.Fairbury would then drop two straight losing 2-15 to Adams Central on Tuesday, April 4, and then 4-14 to Falls City on Thursday, April 6.Fairbury was looking to find answers for the offensive woes going against Central City early Monday morning on April 10. With the first game, losing 0-4, still no answers were found for the offense as only two hits were mustered as those came by Blayne Schelbitzki and Jakolbe Atkins each going one for two.Schelbitzki took the loss on the mound going four and two-thirds innings allowing three runs on five hits, while also striking out five. Fairbury would then go on against Maxwell with more of the same troubles losing 0-10, this time only getting one lone hit coming from Auggie Judd. Brendon Runge took the loss pitching four innings, allowing two hits, four runs and striking out six. Fairbury was at Louisville yesterday and will be at Twin River tomorrow with coverage from those games in the Friday Digital Edition.While the home game on Friday, April 14 will be against Crete with coverage from that game being in next weeks print edition.
