Just Five More Minutes

I held my little daughter, Adaline, in a recliner, she was just a few weeks old. We both fell asleep and had a really long nap.I put her to bed that night, woke up and she was walking. Took a nap, she was starting school. Fell asleep that night and she was driving.Waking up Sunday morning, she was graduating high school.It seems like it has only been a few days, but it has been 18 years.Many parents can relate to this narrative. It feels like you go to bed, the next day your kids are reaching a milestone. One day you are having a tea party in the living room with your little princess, the next they are an actual queen. Soon she will be leaving the nest and going off to become a young adult.I will use this as a time of reflection, noting that our time with our kids, and our time here in general, can quickly slip through our fingers. We should relish these moments and look forward to the next.Have you ever been really productive, working on a project under several constraints, trying to get it done? At the end of the day, you notice time flew past. On a slow day, just lazying around, an hour seems like an eternity.These years have flown by as I hope I have been active in raising my children.Now I am looking forward to waking up and she’ll be walking down the aisle of her college graduation. Then possibly down the aisle of her wedding. Then I will wake up to the sounds of grand kids wanting me to tell them another story.To my beautiful daughter Adaline, thank you for being you, I love you. To my other kids, Olivia and Elijah, I know I will wake up one day and another milestone will be reached. I plan to enjoy every waking second.
