Kuzelka Achieves Several Records At FHS

Konrad Kuzelka has achieved a lot in his high school wrestling career.He holds the Fairbury High School record for career pins, season pins and was the first wrestler at FHS to reach 100 pins in his career. He was the second Jeff to get 100 wins as a junior.According to Derek Garfield, Kuzelka’s longtime coach at FHS, the formula is simple for Konrad’s success: desire.“What makes Konrad so good is his pure desire for success,” Garfield said.He noted Kuzelka started wrestling before kindergarten and has spent many years working hard by putting in the mat time to be as good as he can be.“ I realized when Konrad was a little guy, maybe first or second, that he had the talent and work ethic to be something special. It has been a lot of fun watching him develop over the years,” Garfield said.One term some coaches use for athletes is that they are coachable.Is Kuzelka coachable?For Garfield, Kuzelka is fun to coach.“Konrad is a blast to coach because he is ALWAYS coachable. Sometimes when athletes have a ton of success they tend not to listen to the coaches, but that is NOT the case with Konrad! He is always willing to learn.”Not only does Kuzelka have a desire to win, but has a desire to win impressively.“Konrad has a desire to not only win but also to dominate his opponents. That is why he has so much success being a pinner! He is always trying to put people away via the pin!” Garfield noted.Kuzelka is not only a sponge of information, but can teach a thing or two as well.“I always learn from my athletes,” Garfield said. “One thing I have learned is that as a coach, when you have an athlete as talented as Konrad, you have to continue to improve your own coaching in order to help push him to the best he can be! It is my job to make sure he continues to learn and grow, and to do that I also have to be willing to learn and grow as a coach. I think the biggest thing Konrad has taken from his coaches is the fact that he knew early in his career that to be his best he had to be willing to get on the mat! Konrad has put in a ton of time/travel to be where he is today!”
