Lady Jeffs Dominate with Defense

The Fairbury Lady Jeffs grabbed an early lead, and didn't look back as the defense put the pedal to the floor, with plenty of aggression, and ran away with a 61-28 victory against Heartland on Thursday, December 5. The word of the night for Fairbury had to be “aggression,” as the team racked up well over double digits in steals and going the extra mile for the chances on the ground. As the first quarter was winding down, if there was ever an example of the effort Fairbury looks to give out, this was it. With a “token” press, sometimes, the right person leading that press can create chances. That chance came by senior Karelin Deras, knocking the ball loose, all the while diving on the ground to give an assist to a running sophomore Evelyn Timmons. With the 35-second shot clock-era beginning that night, fans and athletes are going to get a crash course this season with it. Fairbury, however, matched the pace of their opponent and made the shot-clock a second thought. Both teams displayed a pace that seemingly neutralized the clock. It wasn't until late in the second quarter that the first official shot-clock buzzer sounding off for the whole 35-seconds for a possession was heard. That possession happened to be in the hands of Fairbury. But not to worry, senior Izzy Ohlde got it off the hands just in time to sink the three on the right wing, much to her own, the fans', teammates' and coach's delight. The first half ended 38-14, with a comfortable lead for Fairbury going into the second half. In the third quarter, the defense for Fairbury turned up and the lead grew even bigger. By that quarter's end, the score was 61-22. In the fourth quarter, Fairbury wouldn't score again, but held their opponents to six points with the final score reaching 61-28. It was a solid first night and a first victory that can be looked back on as a tone setter.
