Larry Elmer Germer

Larry Elmer Germer was born on April 24, 1941, near Hubbell, Nebraska. He passed away on October 25, 2024 in Beatrice, Nebraska. For 62 years, Larry was a respected and cherished member of the Diller, Nebraska community. Larry’s commitment to his community and strong support of education made a great impact on many lives. Larry graduated from Chester High School, and then received an associate degree from Fairbury Junior College in 1960. He went on to receive a bachelor’s degree from UNL in 1962, as well as a master’s degree in 1975. Larry taught at Diller High School as a vocational agriculture instructor for 12 years followed by teaching in Lincoln public schools for 2 years. Larry served as a University of Nebraska Agriculture Extension Educator in Gage County for 30 years. He developed and hosted the Yard and Garden program on KWBE and KUTT, as well as guest appearances on Nebraska Educational Television’s Backyard Farmer. His outreach programs included youth programs, 4-H, and Master Gardener. After retiring from the university as Professor Emeriti, Larry continued to contribute to his community as a volunteer and was involved with many area organizations. Larry judged horticulture and woodworking at county fairs during the summer, a testament to his love for community engagement. His commitment to service was recognized when he was awarded the Nebraska Community College Association Distinguished Alumnus Award and the National Association of County Agricultural Agents Distinguished Service Award. Larry married Sondra Cornelius on June 8, 1968. They are the parents of Gina (Clay) Aurand, Jon (Jessica) Germer, Jill (Paul) Rallis, Julie (Adam) Walter, Jennifer (Brian) Nish and Joshua Germer. Their grandchildren are Lexia (Dusty) Zenger, Lanessa, Lasondra, and Blake Aurand; Paige, Chloe, and Landon Germer; Reid, Pierce, and Liv Rallis; Aiden, Asher, Aston, and Adelyn Walter; Harvey, Vivian, Audrey Nish. Their great-grandchildren are Etta and Walter Zenger. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Germer, mother, Evelyn (Messing) Germer, and sister, Joyce Fielder. A family prayer service is scheduled for Wednesday, October 30 at 10:45 AM at St Paul Lutheran Church, 121 Lavelle Street, Diller, Nebraska, 68342. A celebration of Larry’s life service will follow at 11:00 AM at the same location. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Larry’s memory to Gage County 4-H, St Paul Lutheran Church, and the Diller Foundation Fund with the funeral home in charge.
