Lee Enterprises Continues to Struggle from Cyberattack

By Gordon Hopkins The cyberattack that disrupted the publication of both print and e-editions of several local papers published by Lee Enterprises for multiple days continues to cause problems. A message on the front page of The Beatrice Daily Sun reads, “Due to serious technical outages across our company, today's newspaper configuration has been changed. These changes, while temporary, were aimed at ensuring delivery of today's edition of The Beatrice Daily Sun.” Lee Enterprises has not provided details of the cyberattack but, according to Eduard Kovacs, editor of Security Week, a cybersecurity news website, “the disruptive nature of the cyberattack suggests that Lee Enterprises may have been targeted in a ransomware attack.” That theory has been echoed by other cybersecurity experts, including security awareness advocate Erich Kron, who recently said. “Although it isn't officially announced, the symptoms of this attack have all of the signs of a significant ransomware event.”Kron added, “Ransomware groups love to target organizations that are time-sensitive, and media outlets absolutely fit that description, especially ones that produce a physical product.” It is important to note that Lee Enterprises has neither confirmed nor denied that the outage was there result of ransomware. As of press time, no known ransomware group has taken credit for the attack.Lee Enterprises is one of the largest newspaper groups in the United States, publishing 75 daily newspapers and 350 weekly newspapers and specialty publications in 26 states, including Nebraska.
