1926Traveling in Europe, John A. and Hattie Marthis of Fairbury arranged to have primary election ballots sent so they could vote by mail from London, England.The Fairbury Journal said $10 worth of entertainment could be enjoyed for the price of a $2 ticket to the Fairbury Chautauqua.1936The house on the Simmons farm south of Fairbury burned.Fairbury’s hottest night in history occurred with an overnight “low” of 85 degrees.Grocery prices in Fairbury included ice-cold watermelon, two cents a pound; cantaloupes, two for 15 cents; lemons, 25 cents a dozen; peaches, $2.19 a bushel; bananas, five cents a pound; grape-fruit, seven for 25 cents; oranges, two dozen for 25 cents; pink salmon, 10 cents a can; pork roast, 15 cents a pound; and three cans of assorted vegetables for 25 cents.1946Dr. Ralph L. Cassel, formerly of Geneva, became associated with Dr. D.O. Hughes in medicine and surgery. 1956Alternating days for watering lawns helped meet the water shortage in Fairbury. The city library had its own well from which air-conditioning was supplied and the water then used on the lawn; several business places had their own wells for air-conditioning use.The Rev. Claude Pittenger of the Church of the Nazarene, left Fairbury for a pastorate in Chanute, Kansas.The First National Bank advertised that among its customers were members of the fifth generation of families first served in 1883.1966Frank Elliott, 1958 graduate of Fairbury Junior College and later from Doane College, was chosen FJC football coach.George Mackay resigned as Fairbury Fire Chief after 20 years in the department.Former pupils of Ruth Wallace and Dorothy Strain in the Endicott school staged an appreciation dinner for them.The annual pageant, "Echoes of the Oregon Trail," was not staged due to lack of participants.1976Pauline Smith retired as assistant cashier and as office manager of Fair-bury utilities, not having missed a day at work due to illness in 26 years. Tennis courts were being installed in McNiah Park. Mark Knobel and Mike Dux were Fairbury chapter delegated to a national Future Farmers Conference in Washington, D.C.1986Area farmers donated enough hay to fill about five boxcars for the hay Share program to aid drought-stricken farmers in the southeastern United States. Chamber of Commerce Executive Secretary Cheryl Seachord resigned to accept a teaching position at Chester-Hubbell-Byron School. Judy Kluge clucked her way to California to appear on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Kluge won the hen division of a chicken clucking contest in Wayne and was invited to appear on the show with John Agler of Wayne, who won the rooster division.Brent Brackle was first in the boys 15-17 group, in the Pepsi/PGA Junior Golf Tournament at the Fairbury Country Club.2006Norris Public Power District Blamed a bird for a power outage in rural Dewitt.
